my porch/my life contact other aprons blue ribbons work with me recipe box \n'); tuesday, july 11, 2017 festival tees posted by katie rhea / no comments » / crumbs , home and garden alright. so every now and again i get some time to craft. i’m one of those jack (jill?) of all trades, master of none gals. i dabble. i’ve some crochet hooks, some canvases, lots of paper, lots of glue. you know what i *don’t* like?? scrapbooking. i actually love it in theory, but it’s soooo overwhelming and requires sooooo many pieces. i’ve since donated allll my scrapbooking supplies and just kept a few sheets of card stock. anyhow, i love me some tie-dye. this shirt was so easy to make, and gave a little different effect than typical tie-dye, like, i really want to make some more. there are tons of ideas floating around pinterest, and nowadays they’re referred to as “festival tees.” ha. so apparently if you’re going to southby (sxsw), acl, coachella, steamboat springs, or any of the other millennial venues, you need a tied up, sprayed, slayed “festival tee.” i was cool and didn’t even know it. we went to our own little concert on july 4th weekend after day of tubing and camping. i reallllly wanted to make my fried chicken , but someone in the house wouldn’t let me bring the fryer, so we made shish kebabs instead. anyways, my friends and i needed a theme. ‘merica. that was our theme. so on to t-shirt designing i went. the beads obviously take the longest part. find a friend. cut 1″ strips along the bottom of the t-shirt, about 3-5″ long. (i used about 1.5 lengths of the scissors as my guide.) thread the pony beads on a make a knot. wait to wash the shirt until after the project, the new starchiness will make everything easier. the tie-dye is the funnest part. i basic kit from wal-mart that comes with powdered dye in a squirt bottle. but i, *i my friends,* put it in a spray bottle. this is your key!!!! i happened to have 2 bottles leftover from bath & body works body spray that i just knew i would need for a project. place a piece of cardboard or paper inside the shirt to absorb any soak through. place a stencil on top of the shirt – i also found this chevron design at walmart. the key is to spray lightly, don’t worry about soaking the stencil. i did that with the guys’ shirts and the dye bled under the stencil. i just sprayed a couple spritz of red, then a couple spritzes of blue on the bottom, and it created this cool ombre technique! i loved them!! after the dye has set for 6-8 hours, i washed all the shirts on cold and added in some vinegar for good measure to help the colors set. they did wash out a little and get lighter, but i really loved the vintage look they gave it. i reeeallllly want to *spray* tie-dye all the things now!! if y’all spray anything, tag me on the instagram @hillcountrycook, i’d love to see what you came up with! ~peace, love, and tie (spray) dye y’all… share no comments monday, july 10, 2017 my postpartum diet posted by katie rhea / 2 comments » / appetizers , hidden veggies , main dish my postpartum diet consists of these wraps, y’all. i’m 6 months out, and i’ve reached pre-baby weight. and i owe it all to my mom. i’ve always battled my weight. and i mean that in the sense that i always lied to myself about how healthy i was eating, or what necessary steps had to be taken… like, that food eaten over the sink does, in fact, have calories. then i would whine about how did i gain 10 pounds again, and why won’t it come off. (oh, 2 cups of chocolate granola with milk as an after work snack will do that? but, it’s granola!) i gained 50 pounds with this pregnancy, easy. and i didn’t even go crazy! i “watched” what i ate, as in, i didn’t eat a bunch of fast food, cheeseburgers, and melted hershey’s bars (hello pregnant britney, 2006). but then again, i didn’t really watch it, as well. still ate lots of cereal, pasta, and hey, that first trimester sickness, all i could stand was top ramen many a nights. those last few weeks, i definitely indulged in some pop tarts, ice cream, and oreos. and man, the swelling, ohhh the swelling. some pictures i look back and literally wonder if i was having an allergic reaction to life. so, blessed be my mother. she stayed the first few weeks with me, as most mothers do. my husband works nights, and didn’t have any vacation, so he went back to work as soon as we got the baby home. you know no love like the love for your mother when she helps you with your first child. i couldn’t stop crying. i was so overwhelmed, my hormones were whack, yo, like whack. i continually asked my husband, “do you think i’m weird?” (i can’t stop laughing now.) my mom made sure i ate 3 meals a day, and even pumped me full of snacks while i nursed. and i didn’t get any oreos, as requested; she fed me one gala apple with 2 tablespoons of almond butter. she would make me steel cut oats for breakfast, or all bran flakes with yogurt (what?!), and she would smirk as i asked for some sweetener or honey. when i would finish, i would say, “do i get my pop tart now?” but, thanks to her, i’ve lost all the baby weight! and i feel great. i’ve finally realized that (legit) in my thirties, you’ve got to eat well allllllllllllll during the week (yes, like friday too), then you can “treat” a little on saturday and sunday. i brought these wraps to work for my lunches when i returned, and all my friends wanted one. in the beginning i shared with glee, as i was so tired of eating them (le sigh), but now i’m back to craving them again in these hot dog days of summer. remember, like my mother told me, the key is to stuff them with a lot of greens. greens, greens, not mayonnaise and mustard. you can thank me later. ~ peace, love, and spinach wraps y’all print save skinny spinach wrap yield: 1 wrap ingredients: 1 spinach tortilla 1 t hummus 1 t guacamole 1 hearty handful of baby spinach and kale 3 slices of deli meat 1 thin slice cheese salt and pepper directions: spread a thin layer of hummus and guacamole on your spinach wrap. top with plenty of greens. layer with sliced cheese and fresh deli meat. top with cracked pepper and salt. roll tightly, and cut in half. wrap with cling wrap, or waxed paper. saves well! share 2 comments saturday, july 8, 2017 summer snacks posted by katie rhea / 2 comments » / appetizers i did the ezekiel thing, y’all. i kept hearing everyone talk about it. sprouted wheat bread, ancient grains…. blah blah blah. to save me from butchering the infinite wisdom i gleaned from the inter webs, check out this cute article about why people are so obsessed with this stuff. all i can think about is what kind of french toast it will make. but alas, it’s tasty, it really is! i’ve been trying to get my postpartum body back, and this was a good little snack to get me through an afternoon. if nothing else makes me ravenous as a kid in a candy shop, nursing will do it. i am frequently staarrvvinggg. my stomach literally feels the bellows of the wind through an underground cavern. i’m not being dramatic, i swear. it’s summertime, you feel instantly skinnier. rather than reach for that bag of popcorn, or sneak in that pop-tart, try this first. try adding onion, or butter leaf lettuce, it’s delicious, and the carb gods won’t even be mad at you. print save summertime skinny toast ingredients: 1 slice ezekiel bread 1 t hummus 1/2 sliced avocado 4 sliced cherry tomatoes 2 cucumber slices salt and pepper directions: toast your ezekiel bread. spread with hummus. delicately layer on sliced avocado, tomatoes, cucumber, and top with salt and pepper. share 2 comments page 1 of 55 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 ... 55 > peace, love, & cooking y'all! \n'); search recent posts festival tees my postpartum diet summer snacks some mean ol’ baked beans earthquake cake i want all the recipes: categories appetizers bars beverages breakfast crumbs dips giveaways gluten-free hidden veggies home and garden jell-o main dish paleo pie ya'll! recipes salad sides soups sweets trav
